Frequently Asked Questions

NOTE: This FAW is specific to our House Blend product.  For information on all other products, please contact Furball’s Choice.

How much should I feed my dog?

We recommend feeding 2-3% of body weight per day. Puppies may need a little more while seniors may take a little less.  As with any new diet, monitor your pet’s body condition for the first couple of months and adjust feeding amounts according to goals.

Is your House Blend a complete diet?

We believe that our House Blend is a complete diet, however, many customers report adding more to it. People add such things as fruits, vegetables, whole meats, and supplements.  Furball’s Choice participates in weekly seminars and information sessions held by the Pet Poison Hotline.  Contact Furball’s Choice to find out if the ingredient you want to add is safe for your animals.

Why does the colour of the House Blend change?

We like to add beef blood to the House Blend. If the butcher saves extra blood then the bricks appear very red. If we do not have any blood, the bricks can be a pale brown colour.

Why does the moisture content change?

The moisture content of the ingredients we buy varies quite a bit. If the ingredients have less moisture, the blend will be drier. If the ingredients have extra moisture, we have no way to remove it.

Should I drain off the bloody moisture?

No! The blood and moisture are part of the food. Your dog should have all of it.

Where does the food come from?

All the ingredients come from slaughter facilities inspected by federal or provincial agents.

Should I cook it?

We believe your dog will get the best possible nutrition from the product just as it is. You may cook it if you wish but it is recommended to feed raw to get the most nutritional value as the cooking process will destroy much of the nutrients in the feed.

How do I use it?

Most of our customers move a portion of the frozen blend into a sealed container and put it in the refrigerator in the evening. It is usually ready for feeding the next day (depending on the temperature in your fridge).  As the brick thaws it usually turns into a thick stew and can be easily separated with a spoon, knife, or fork . A few customers feed the frozen portions to their dogs. **Please Note – take extra care to keep the dog food away from human food and always follow safe food handling precautions**

My dog liked your House Blend at first but does not want to eat it anymore?

We understand that your dog may not always want our House Blend . Composition of the blend can vary slightly from batch to batch and some pets, for example, like the bloodier batches more so they may “hold out”.  For pickier pets, rotating blends and meals can help break the tendency to be finicky about their food.
If you have any problems, please contact us to return the unused portion for a pro-rated refund, or replacement.

How long will it keep?

As long as the blend remains properly frozen, we believe the nutritional value remains unchanged for a few months.  We recommend not purchasing amounts that you will need to store for longer than a month or two to ensure your pets get the freshest product possible.
